With a ballooning need across Aotearoa, CAP is preparing for dozens of people like Kaylin and Johan to call for help every week in the lead-up to Christmas.
Will you help one of them?
*$46 will start a new person on their Debt Help journey this Christmas. Any funds raised above the need for food boxes will go where needed most. Online donations are powered by Pushpay and are secure.

Kaylin and Johan reached out to CAP for help, a few weeks before Christmas two years ago:
“Before CAP, we were so deep in the hole…
The last two weeks of the month we’d be left with around $50 and we’d still need to get to work… still need to buy bread and milk. It was daunting.”
Like one in two NZ households, Kaylin and Johan were living paycheck to paycheck.
They had used all their earnings to get jobs and start a new life in New Zealand. Nothing was leftover. Moreover, budgeting was something they’d just never known or thought about.
Kaylin and Johan soon found themselves in a ‘deep hole’ of debt. Their relationship frayed to the point where they couldn’t even talk about money.
Hearing about CAP through a community group, Kaylin called for help.
“Talking about our financial situation was hard… I felt
vulnerable. But they were so kind and prayed for me.”
CAP enlisted a specialist team of caseworkers to provide solutions for their debt situation. In addition, there was a CAP support worker from a local church to meet the couple face-to-face, and to walk alongside them.
The couple felt cared for, and had tangible hope:
“The relief started coming. We had something to follow, a path to follow. They offered a food parcel if we needed it.”
This Christmas, will you bring this same hope & help to another family?

Kaylin & Johan: “Thank you for making a change.”
Christmas is a time for connection – for remembering “Immanuel, which means God with us.” (Matthew 1:23b). But sadly — like 3 out of 5 families before coming to CAP — Kaylin and Johan said they found themselves increasingly isolated because of debt:
👨👩👧 “I didn’t want Christmas to come. It felt like a burden, a chore.
We have community around us… but I didn’t want to see my friends. I didn’t want to do anything.”
Friend, when you donate today you’ll ensure another family like Kaylin and Johan’s receives free, life-changing help.
Kaylin and Johan met with their Debt Coach, Andy, who helped them gather bills and paperwork to get the CAP Debt Help Journey rolling.
And what’s really special, is that during their CAP journey, they encountered the love and care of the local church – such as when their son was born, the church arranged delivery of some meals.
The couple have since started going back to church as a family. Here’s what Kaylin says about Christmas now:
“Before CAP, we never thought of the meaning of Christmas. It never came to mind because were just so depressed or dark… we just couldn’t.
Now, Christmas is what should be. It’s about family, it’s about God, it’s about our faith.”
And because CAP works savings into budgets, Kaylin and Johan had a buffer! A few months ago, when their four-year-old daughter broke her glasses, Kaylin and Johan were delighted to have enough in their savings to buy a new pair for her, straight away!
They realised they could even put aside some money for this Christmas season – what a turnaround!
“It’s exciting to sit down with our budget tools. It never felt like that before. We still only manage to do a little savings, but it’s something. It’s something, and it’s amazing.”
Kaylin and Johan are so grateful for the long-term support from CAP they have received, which was made possible through the generous donations of many supporters:
“Thank you for making a change. I don’t think there’s enough words. I’ve never dreamed so much in my life!
And just know you’re making a huge difference for families… It’s going to have a flow-on effect. We’ll be able to teach our children and they can teach their children.”
