"There was minimal food... not being able to socialise because you haven't got enough money... I remember calling CAP. The guy was so kind and really good at listening.  I'm not a Christian, but when we did the karakia, the prayer, it felt really warm. I felt relieved that someone cared."

Last year, 217 people like Luna called CAP for help in the lead up to Christmas. Most of these precious New Zealanders had exhausted every other avenue and had nowhere else to turn.

Last year's Christmas: Luna's story

Imagine the stress of raising two teenage boys as a loving mum, without the resources to give them what they need. Luna spent nights replaying memories of her sons' faces as she explained that it was instant noodles for dinner again...  that it wasn't possible for them to go to the movies with their friends.

"It was things like credit companies chasing me up and... not having enough income to meet what I was needing... struggling for the basics."

And with her family's needs going unmet, her mental and social landscapes were ground-down too.

"You've got no space, it's chaotic, you can't think properly and it's really dark. As a single mum, well, if mum's not OK, then the rest of the house... sometimes it was dark. "

Luna "hated" Christmas because it elevated her sense of loneliness.

"You feel down, you don't want to go share your "down-ness" with everybody. So you just stay at home.  You don't want to go out because you feel ashamed."

Friend, you'll be blown-away by what happened next. By donating today, you'll ensure New Zealanders like Luna get this same transformational help:

"I remember having a really good feeling about [that first call to CAP]. The guy was so kind and good at listening. And... well, I'm not a Christian, but when we did the karakia, the prayer, it felt really warm. I felt relieved and that someone cared."

A local CAP Debt Help Coach visited Luna's home, together with a support friend from the local church - who continues to journey alongside her today.

"I didn’t feel judged. It felt like they knew what they were doing. They were taking charge, and I could just relax... 'YAY! I think this is going to work this time.'"

Luna was one of 217 families who called CAP for help in the lead-up to Christmas last year.

CAP is expecting a flood of new families to call for help after an even harder 2020.

Luna remains so grateful for the holistic help provided last Christmas:

"I instantly felt ‘oh thank God.’ I felt supported. The relief that someone had my back."

And she is making awesome progress: because of her newfound money wisdom and CAP's holistic support, Luna's mountain of debt will be gone in two years!

"Just being able to just enjoy life and be present and not have to worry about a whole head full of stuff. I went to the budgeting [CAP Money] course, which was extremely helpful, and I've been trying to convince my 18 year old to do it as well. I'm saving with CAP now - so that's cool!"
