“Life before CAP was a panic room. You’re cornered in every part of you. No way out.”

Give New Zealanders in poverty, like Mel, a chance to start afresh this Christmas.

Right now, there’s an increasing need.

Will you give a one-off gift so that families, like Mel’s, can receive holistic practical help and a new beginning?

As a mum it made me feel sad… You don’t sleep, I can’t even shut my mind. ‘What do I need to pay?’ Our food situation was really bad…

I was thinking, if I ring CAP, they’re going to judge me, but they were the nicest person, they prayed for me… After that call, I slept!”

Last year, Mel was one of 187 people who called CAP in the lead up to Christmas. In 2021 we can expect even more. Most of these New Zealanders had exhausted every other avenue and had nowhere else to turn.

Will you answer the call for another family this Christmas?

Your one-off gift will provide a family with:

A caring first responder to answer their call

A Christmas hamper, or emergency food if needed

Free Debt Help: a budget prioritising life’s essentials such as food and rent; a church community to surround them with love and practical help; plus a team of specialist CAP workers to support them for as long as their journey takes

Last year’s Christmas: Mel’s story

Imagine working hard, but your income is nowhere near enough for you and your young son to live. Imagine two-minute noodles being your go-to meal. Mel would lie awake until 3am, fretting about rent, power and overdue loan payments.

“Life before CAP – it was shocking, legit out of control. We were basically living on $50 a week. This just doesn’t allow you to eat… It got to the point where I had insomnia.”

Christmas time was hard. She had tried to bring up her son never to expect anything, and they would always focus on giving gifts that they made. But last year, despite her preparations, she experienced ‘a break moment’ at a family gathering:

“The other kids are going crazy, opening present after present… and then my son opens up his one present and looks at me and says, ‘I only got one’ – and I felt my heart just drop.”

You’ll be inspired by what happened next. By donating today, you’ll ensure another family like Mel’s get this same transformational help:

”When I finally made that call [to CAP], I was shivering. Her voice was so calm, very sweet. I didn’t feel one bit of judgement whatsoever. And the weirdest thing that I’ve ever heard someone say to me over the phone was, “Can I pray for you?”

After that prayer, a local CAP Debt Help Coach visited Mel’s home, together with a support person. Mel sometimes struggled to trust people, but their kindness put her at ease.

“When I physically gave those bills, I guess a bit of me went with them. And that was the old me… It’s so reassuring – someone comes in and knows that you’re going to get out of it.”

We went from $50 to $150 a week on food. I bought something that has better quality, that is better for my health and better for my son’s health. And I didn’t have to worry anymore. The biggest change is that I slept… because someone took the pressure off me. It was the support that I needed, the support that I never had for so many years…”

2021 has been hard. The need is greater than ever.

By giving a one-off gift, a family like Mel’s will receive the same practical help, love and support that Mel did – a new beginning.

Mel remains so grateful for the life-changing, holistic support she has received. The impact on her and her son has been profound, so we’ll let her have the last word:

“We have time to actually focus on each other, see our weak points, our funny points, our strong points… We gained so much – relationships, relationships with God, a better understanding of God.

CAP has given me my life. It has given me a lot of hope to dream. The future for my son and I is full of possibility.”
